Following January's inaugural meeting of the Lithium Battery Air Safety Advisory Committee (see HazMat Alert 2019-56 for more information), the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) announced today in the Federal Register (Docket No. PHMSA-2019-0098) that the next meeting is planned to be held on September 16-17, 2020, from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. EST.

The meeting will be held at DOT Headquarters, West Building, 1200 New Jersey Avenue SE, Washington, DC 20590-0001. The meeting will also be webcast. Information for accessing the webcast will be posted on the Lithium Battery Safety Advisory Committee website, which is located at:hazmat/rulemakings/lithium-battery-safety-advisory-committee. Requests to attend the meeting must be received by September 2, 2020.

Interested readers are recommended to stay alert for the imminent publication of the March/April issue of The Journal. Patrick Oppenheimer provides an essential review of lithium battery test summary requirements; and Christopher Lind provides a UN report focused entirely on discussion and decisions on electric storage systems. Finally, greatly relevant to libatt transportation, Richard Bornhorst writes about risk management in the context of undeclared shipments.
